30 Days of Biking – Days 28 & 29

Commuted to work both days. Despite calls for rain all week, I’ve managed to avoid the rain bike and keep riding fixed gear (even if I haven’t avoided all the raindrops).

I’m liking the fixed gear more and more as I get more comfortable with the changes in riding technique it requires. It’s little things like pedal position when stopped and practicing track stands so I can minimize the amount of unclipping needed. I’ve written about my fixed gear experiment over at Commute by Bike – check it out for more details.

30 Days of Biking – Days 26, 27

Rode to work yesterday and today, along with a detour up to Green Lake to visit my dentist for a filling. But it was a beautiful morning for a ride, so all along Lake Union I was like a dog with my head out the window, half of my face numbed up and tongue (seemingly) hanging out.

This was also the fourth day of my experiment with fixed-gear commuting – look for my guest blog re that experience on Commute by Bike shortly . . .

Miles: 6, 13
Weather: Relatively sunny.

30 Days of Biking – Days 20-25

I took the family down to the Oregon Coast for the last few days, where we had some beach time, explored Astoria and Fort Stevens and hosted a big Easter get-together for extended family. I knew the house we were renting had bikes, but I also knew that they would be unpredictable. But because of the coast’s spotty weather and the fact that I wouldn’t have much time for anything resembling a lengthy ride, I left my own bikes behind and took a chance on the rental house bikes.

Oh yeah. You really can’t appreciate the rust from this photo, but at least the crankset and brakes still kinda worked. There was no adjusting the seat, which was rusted solidly in place. I ended up riding every day, in all kinds of weather (but mostly the rainy kind). I doubt I got more than 15 total miles in, including the 6 I rode here in Seattle the morning we left.

30 Days of Biking – Days 18 & 19

Commuted to work both days. I wanted to try fixed gear, but had to ride my rain bike Monday because, well, it was raining. So Tuesday was the first day of my fixed gear experiment. No major incidents, but it’s going to take some getting used to. Clipping in is a challenge, and going down Pine with my legs flying furiously feels a little weird. I do like the feeling of “connection” to the ride, however. I had thought that was fixie apologist hyperbole, but it seems to be real.

30 Days of Biking – Days 15, 16 & 17

Another commute to work, and the just did a couple of little neighborhood errand rides over the weekend. I also finally cleaned the street grime off my Cassaroll and switched it over to fixed gear. My assumption is that fixed gear will be suboptimal for my commute, given the steep hill I’ve got to go down and the amount of cornering, but I’m curious enough to give it a try for a couple of weeks. I did a 2 mile experimental ride with it yesterday, and I could definitely feel a difference in “connection” to the bike.

30 Days of Biking – Days 13 & 14

Yesterday was another cold and rainy ride to and from work, but signs of spring are starting to appear – including more bikes on the street.

Today I had an awards ceremony dinner after work, so my ride was a quick ninja unwind around the block before turning in for the night. Minimal rain, and I even think I saw a star or two.

Miles: 6 yesterday, .5 today
Weather: rain, and rain

30 Days of Biking – Day 12

Another sunny day, but the ride in sure was cold – only 36 degrees. Discovered on the ride home that my backpack can hold a six-pack. My co-worker Conrad had whipped up a batch of homebrew, using the backyard hop harvest I’d delivered by bike last fall. My hops are pretty amazing; a single sorry Chinook root transplant from my brother-in-law’s place in Central Oregon has in 3 years created a viney monster on Capitol Hill, producing over 5 gallons of hop cones last year. If anyone wants part of this year’s harvest, let me know.

30 Days of Biking – Days 7 & 8

Ok, I didn’t take my rain gear yesterday either. Circumstances – including an early morning meeting, a visit to the dentist and a parent-teacher conference – all conspired against my riding to work. I barely got a pre-midnight right around the block in.

Today, though: Biked in a brisk 38 on the way in to work, but it was beautiful for the evening commute. Mid-50’s, sunny – one of those days where Seattle doesn’t seem half-bad. I even extended my ride a bit to enjoy the scenery.

It will no doubt rain tomorrow.
